Cannaregio & Castello neighborhoods
Would you like to explore some hidden neighborhoods in Venice? You will discover a city you did not imagine through the eyes of an official guide, and a local person. In those residential areas, you will walk through narrow streets, and emerge into spacious squares, called ‘’campi’’, where you will experience traces of the real Venetian lifestyle.
The tour will start from Campo dei Gesuiti, where the Jesuits built their baroque church, when they returned to Venice after a long absence. In Campo SS. Giovanni e Paolo, you will admire the biggest Gothic church in Venice, and the stunning façade of the Scuola Grande di San Marco, a former brotherhood, turned into the local hospital. In the middle of the square stands an equestrian statue representing Bartolomeo Colleoni, a mercenary engaged by the Venetian Republic. Other places of interests in the area are: the Ospedaletto, where orphaned girls received a musical training, and the church of San Francesco della Vigna, one of the most impressive 16 th century churches in the city. On the way back, you will go past the Greek church with its leaning tower and on to the well-known bookstore called 'Acqua Alta' named after the peculiar high water phenomenon Venice is famous for. The tour will end at Campo Sta Maria Formosa, close to both St. Mark’s Square and the Rialto bridge.
