Mazzorbo: a tour on the green island
Have you ever heard of Mazzorbo island?
It may be an incredible opportunity to visit it and learn more about it! In spite of its charm and captivating history, Mazzorbo has long been overlooked by sightseers, who have generally regarded it as the self-evident natural continuation of Burano.
Around the island, there are hundreds of artichoke farms, vineyards, orchards, and fruit trees scattered with a dozen homes where the local people live. You will enjoy a sense of peace and tranquility here, away from the crowds of tourists. You may moreover be able to interact with the positive vitality of the natural environment.
Our excursion will start at the public boat stop in Mazzorbo. From here, we'll stroll through the well-known Dorona's grape vineyard called Venissa, a sizable space also used by the locals to cultivate their vegetables. Nearby, we will see the historic bell tower of the San Michele Arcangelo church, one of the few remaining ruins of churches that have been destroyed in more recent years. You will admire the islands of San Francesco del Deserto, home to a Franciscan convent, and Burano, famous for its lace making production, as we walk through a path. A short distance away lies the neighborhood cemetery, whose entrance is embellished with statues by Remigio Barbaro, a local artist. There is only one church left on the island, called Santa Caterina, a small charming chapel. In its tower there is still the oldest bronze bell of Venice. The last stop of our tour will be the church.
