Visit Torcello island
Torcello is a landmark for those who love history and art, and is considered one of the oldest settlements in the Venetian lagoon. Prior to Venice's peak, up to the fourteenth century, it was a thriving economic hub, but its downfall hasn't erased the remembrance of its remarkable past. As it happens, the town's central square is home to several noteworthy structures, including the museum, which was previously the old government building, and Santa Fosca's small parish church, a treasure of Romanesque architecture. The ruins of the historic Baptistery from the seventh century are visible in front of the cathedral, the only remaining religious institution on the island. Known as Santa Maria Assunta, the present church is one of the most significant examples of Veneto- Byzantine architecture in the lagoon, built in the eleventh century. Its whole counterfaçade is covered with a massive mosaic depicting the Last Judgment. The bell tower, which was originally used as a watchtower and a lighthouse, is located next to the church. From it, you have an amazing view of the whole lagoon.
